Summer Pause at RBSK

As summer arrives in Finland, Radio Blacksmith Knoll will be stepping away from regular broadcasting for a few weeks.

This is not due to a lack of music, a shortage of ideas, or any dramatic technical failure involving smoke, sparks, or hurried consultations with instruction manuals. Quite simply, summer has arrived, and the station crew has accumulated a rather impressive collection of unfinished projects, postponed chores, and well-intentioned plans that have been quietly multiplying in the background for months.

Some of these tasks involve radio. Many do not.

There are gardens attempting to become wilderness reserves, sheds containing objects that may once have had a purpose, and several mysterious items on the to-do list that nobody now remembers adding. It seems only fair to spend part of the summer investigating these matters before they evolve into permanent features of the landscape.

That does not necessarily mean complete silence from 6120 kHz.

From time to time something may appear on the frequency. A transmitter may be tested. An antenna may be adjusted. Software may be persuaded to cooperate. New ideas may be tried. None of these appearances should be considered scheduled broadcasts. They will simply happen whenever curiosity, opportunity, and a free afternoon happen to collide.

In other words, if you hear us, it probably means somebody was supposed to be doing something else.

Regular programming will return no later than the weekend of August 7–9, when Radio Blacksmith Knoll begins its late-summer and autumn broadcasting season. By then, we hope to have made noticeable progress on both the station’s technical projects and the ever-growing list of domestic obligations.

At the very least, one of those lists should be shorter.

Until then, enjoy the summer, keep an ear on the bands, and if an unexpected signal drifts across the dial, you’ll know we’ve escaped the to-do list for a little while.
