RBSK goes Vappu!

Vappu Weekend on Radio Blacksmith Knoll — 1st to 3rd of May

Vappu, or May Day, is one of those celebrations that has quietly changed shape over time. Traditionally it has roots in labour movements and student culture, but in modern Finland it’s just as much about something simpler: the feeling that winter has finally loosened its grip.

For many, it’s the first proper taste of spring. Student caps come out, parks fill with people, and the season shifts almost overnight. It’s about meeting friends, opening summer cottages, sitting outside a little longer than before, and accepting that even if it’s still only +10 °C, it already feels like summer.

At Radio Blacksmith Knoll, we’re marking the occasion in our own way.

From May 1st to May 3rd, the station will be running non-stop. The playlists are built to follow the rhythm of the weekend: lighter and brighter, familiar songs, not that familiar, local and international super hits, and everything between, all day long. Nothing too rigid, just a flow that matches the mood of a long spring weekend.

There’s also a slightly more technical angle behind the scenes. This extended run doubles as a live test: can the transmitter stay on air, stable and within safe limits, for nearly three days straight? In theory, yes. In practice… that’s exactly what we’re about to find out.

Conditions on 6120 kHz are rarely quiet for long. At times, signals from elsewhere, particularly stronger broadcasters, may drift across the frequency. We’ll stay where we are regardless, somewhere beneath or between them. And every now and then, if the ionosphere happens to cooperate, the band opens up and everything clears for a while. Those are the moments you don’t plan, you just catch them when they happen.

Off-air, it’s Vappu in the usual sense as well. The balcony is getting its annual spring reset, and the grill is being brought back into service in the traditional way: slightly optimistic timing, slightly uncertain weather, and the firm belief that it’s already warm enough.

So wherever you are – whether you’re out celebrating, opening the cottage for the season, or just enjoying a quieter weekend at home, you’re welcome to tune in.

Radio Blacksmith Knoll — keeping the signal alive, one long spring weekend at a time.
